11/2/2009: "Affluence, Feelings of Stress, and Well-Being" article suggested by ISQOLS member Michael B. Frisch

Ed Diener, Ng Weiting and their colleagues have just published an article on Affluence, Feelings of Stress, and Well-Being based on Gallup data on over 125, 000 people from 121 countries.

The article is a great roadmap for future research in many other areas as well.    For example, on an individual level, wealthy countries are rich in happiness, but also in stress, presumably from our hectic lifestyle which gives precious little time to stop and smell the roses, or admire the color purple in a field of flowers-from Alice Waters' The Color Purple. Tim Kasser's idea of time affluence emerges as an all too precious commodity in light of these findings.  The authors also suggest further study of the effects of stress on the quality of our lives.

Interestingly, and thankfully, from a research perspective, negative affect is discriminable from the concept of stress.
